movie review ...sandesham

Who is the superstar in malayalam film ? Even a non-keralite will say it is Mammootty and Mohanlal . But there is a superstar in malayalam cinema who is so multifaceted that he has no equal . He is none other than Sreenivasan the actor, the scriptwriter ,comedian all rolled into one . His movies take us to a world of fantasy of humour yet beyond all that there will be a social message . Yesterday i saw one of his old movies Sandesham a second time . Sandesham the word meaning"  Message" has a message to tell even this day . Its a story which shows the world of politics with all its hypocrisies out in the open . A retired railway employee has two sons who belong to opposite parties and how the world of politics makes them inhuman . The characters are excellently played by Sreenivasan ,jayaram and thilakan .  The film is directed by sathyan anthikad who has shown great directorial prowess .
The film is full of comedy but each dialogue shows the hypocrisy of petty politicians . To quote one example a politician from north visits kerala and he wants "Naariyal ka paani "  .  None of the kerala followers understand what he wants and one guy asks "full bottle or half bottle ?"  . He thought the politician was asking for alcohol . Another one thought he was asking for "Naari"  meaning lady in malayalam . Finally when someone told it is coconut water the entire followers climbed all the coconut trees and cut down the fruits in the entire plot  .
If you like serious cinema wrapped in comedy you will definitely like sandesham .  For non-keralites subtitles are needed as its not slapstick comedy . After a recent shocking movie "Agent Vinod "  this old movie soothed my shocked senses by its comedy and message .

P.S  :  More On Agent Vinod  by Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor on my next blog (or rather how i paid for their honeymoon  )
