Recently i was forced to climb a coconut tree (only 9 feet ) because after bangladesh trip i was very thirsty for the tender coconut kerala drink . Also my cousin also wanted it so i personally made sure that i plucked the good ones from the tree .
Unlike an apple or an orange , once you get it the process of getting inside the tasty liquid (tender coconut water ) and the white tender coconut pieces is a herculean task unless you know the right technique of cutting the 2 inch thick shell . Highly intelligent as i am :) i spent almost half an hour cutting, struggling ,blaming (ya... i blamed the huge knife for its lack of sharpness ) and finally got inside one . As i tiredly started on the second "fruit " the coconut feller a 70 year old man suddenly came (he was away on another assignment and hence i tried my luck because of intense thirst ).
He stared at me and looked at what i was doing . Son , why are you struggling with the coconut ?? You should have felled the "tender coconut " . After an hour of my struggle i am realising my mistake which for him just took just 1 second . Coconut plucking is not rocket science and doesnt require complicated formulas but this reinstated my belief in "specialisation " and "experience " . In that particular thing this old man had 50 years of experience while i had just one coconut felling experience .
The point is we should always understand that experts are experts and especially in fields like medical care its very important that experts are always consulted . I see many times when some people consult other equally ignorant people on medical matters . Though for simple illnesses like common cold this is ok its worrying when people believe what other laymen say about illnesses and their treatment . All this because they want to save money and time in going to an expert .
And dont think that "Just MBBS " people are not needed . In many illnesses they are also having much more expertise than most of the laymen . And they are able to guide you in going to the appropriate specialist . So next time when you need a radiologists assistance or a technical expert in ct scans or medical software contact me but for heavens sake dont make me climb up a tree :) for plucking tender coconut .....
